Choosing a kennel

With the holidays in full swing, make them a happy time for your pets too.  Many of us will be heading out of town and leaving our pets in kennels.  Just be sure you choose a kennel that will keep your pets both safe and happy.  There are many websites, such as the Better Business Bureau that can offer insight into kennels in your area.  Always visit kennels prior to making your final decision.  Check the living quarters, exercise areas, and staff.  They must all meet your approval.  Remember, your pet will be in unfamiliar surroundings while you are gone.  And be sure to confirm your reservation, as well as drop off and pickup times well in advance of your trip.

Are poinsettias poisonous?

There is a rumor going around that poinsettias are poisonous, but it is just that, a rumor.  When many household and seasonal plants are very dangerous to us and our pets, poinsettias do not make the list.  I still wouldn’t recommend eating them as there are occasional cases of vomiting in humans from their ingestion, but nothing to worry about.  Poinsettias can cause gastrointestinal irritation, drooling, diarrhea, and vomiting in pets, but again nothing severe or fatal.  Mistletoe, on the other hand, can cause gastrointestinal distress, a slowed heartbeat, and other reactions to its toxins.  Although it can cause severe reactions, mistletoe is not believed to be fatal.  Regardless of what you have heard, always check with a veterinarian or other professional before exposing your pets to potentially toxic plants.

Preparing for winter: Don’t forget your pets

As temperatures drop and the rain, sleet, and snow build, it is time to prepare your pets for winter.  Make sure your pets have warm and dry shelter available, especially at night when temperatures can be bitterly cold.  Make sure they have fresh water available.  If dishes are left outside, water can easily turn to ice.  If you are taking your pets on walks, make sure their feet and fur stay dry if temperatures are near freezing.  And when you are winter proofing your items, keep these things in mind…  If you are changing antifreeze in your car, wipe up any spills as it is very toxic to pets.  Salting your driveway or walkway may be a necessity, but rock salt is damaging to pet’s paws.  Treat your pets like the family members they are.  For generations we have domesticated animals; and your pets should not be considered wild animals that can fend for themselves.

Don’t short your pet’s health care

In an effort to save money, many pet owners have taken shortcuts with their pet’s healthcare, but can it be done without sacrificing pet safety?  Veterinary wellness visits, prophylactic medicine such as vaccinations, and emergency care are necessities in your pet’s healthcare.  Skimping in these areas is dangerous and will likely cost you more in the long run.  The FDA warns that buying medicines online is one of the major causes of harmful side effects.  One way to help is to play with your pets.  The interaction can keep your pets both happy and healthy.

Educate your children on how to care for their pet

Children without pets commonly ask for a puppy or a kitten.  But here are some topics to discuss with them prior to adopting a new pet.  First, explain that pets are not toys, they are living creatures.  As such, they can be moody, frightened, or just plain sleepy.  They are also a big responsibility.  Get your children to commit to taking care of it.  If your children give it food and water, and clean-up after it, you can instill a greater sense of responsibility. It is also important for your children to realize that pets can be annoying at times and how to deal with it.  Never hit an animal – it will only scare them or cause them to fight back.  Most importantly, go over how to keep pets safe.  Include what to feed your pet, keeping dangerous items away from them, keeping doors and gates closed, and so on.  Of course, don’t forget to mention how wonderful pets are.

Pet pain relievers

Many pets are in pain, but most medications are nothing more than pain relievers.  There are ways to make significant improvements in your pet’s comfort level with lasting results.  Nutrition is a great place to start.  Your veterinarian can devise a weight loss program or at least make sure that your pet is receiving all the nutrients it needs.  Animal chiropractic can help balance the body mechanically which will ensure smoother and proper motion in every joint.  This will help keep inflammation and pain to a minimum while discouraging arthritic changes.

Beware of Tetanus

Tetanus is a disease caused by a bacterial infection.  It is very rare in both humans and pets, but that didn’t stop Buddy the Labrador from contracting the disease.  He was apparently infected when a rusty part of his home kennel poked a wound on his paw.  The infection caused the tetanus which is a potentially fatal disease of the nervous system.  Tell tale signs in a dog are an appearance of a surprised look on its face and exposure of the whites of its eyes.  Tetanus is treatable with antibiotics if diagnosed soon enough.

Keep your pet safe during the Holidays

The holiday season means a lot of snuggling up with the family pet around the fireplace.  But just because you are making Smores and drinking Hot Chocolate, doesn’t mean your pet should partake in the festivities.  Pets have difficulty with many human foods, especially sweets and chocolate.  You should also be aware of decorations.  Your pets may chew or swallow many items such as electrical wire, tinsel, or even plants.  Keep your pets safe and have a pleasant holiday season.
